Last October, Redhook saw something on IMDB about the Summer 2012 release of The Expendables 2. Immediately, he was overcome with panic.

He hadn’t even seen The Expendables yet. Surely, there would be intricate plot points and character arcs he needed to understand before watching the sequel. Think of watching The Godfather: Part II before seeing The Godfather. It would be exactly like that.

Part I, then Part II. Never the other way around. Go ahead and skip Part III.

So, later than night, Redhook streamed The Expendables. It was everything he’d hoped for. Camaraderie, betrayal, redemption. Also, car chases, explosions, fist fighting, covert ops, crooked government agents, planes, helicopters, hot chicks and clumsy, catch-phrase infused dialogue.

The formerly handsome Mickey Rourke does not return for the sequel.

All you need to know about The Expendables (1 or 2) in one simple shot.

The Expendables also continued a proud action movie staple: explosions as diversion. Blow something up at one end of the compound, then go achieve your real objective at the other end. It never fails. And SPOILER ALERT it never fails Stallone & Co.

Lastly, if an annoying coworker scoffs and asks you, “Why would you pay good money to see that movie?” simply shake your head. Then, in a clear, hushed, reverent tone say, “Stallone, Statham, Schwarzenegger, Willis, Li, Van Damme, Lundgren, Norris, Crews, Couture. That’s why.”

After that, you might want to create a diversion so HR doesn’t catch you sneaking away from work to watch the movie.

Making the news can be a dubious honor. It’s either the fast track to fame or infamy. Or both. The Paris Hilton video comes to mind. Not that Redhook has any direct experience with that sort of thing he’d admit to.

Recently, Redhook heard from a friend that he’d ended up in the Los Angeles Times. Shocked, Redhook couldn’t recall being in LA over the past few weeks (he has a solid alibi and witnesses to back that up). Still, he had to check out the paper to see what was up. Turns out it was true:

According the beautiful people in LA, Redhook Pilsner is “an easygoing beer that would be comfortable with a lot of backyard snacks, particularly when they involve cheese. Basically, though, it’s a “session” beer for socializing.” Redhook won’t argue with that. He loves people and cheese.

Summer’s crested its midpoint, but there’s still plenty of time to enjoy Redhook Pilsner’s refreshing taste. Grab a case, have fun and, unless you’re saving orphans, try to keep your name out of the papers.

According to the earth’s axis, summer in the Northern Hemisphere starts on June 21, give or take. Up here in Seattle, Redhook knows that’s complete BS. Summer never arrives until after the Fourth of July. So, now that summer’s here in earnest, Redhook’s looking forward to drinking outside.

One annoying thing Redhook’s seen at far too many BBQs over the years is a dearth of bottle openers. Either someone loses the one by the cooler or the host forgets to put one out in the first place. And at some point you’ve gotta grow out of being the dude who always has an opener on his key chain, right?

Redhook’s been so caught up in rooting for the return of the Sonics and against the OKC Thunder this week, he almost forgot about his dad.

Yes, this Sunday is Father’s Day and Redhook wanted to give Dad a quick shout out. As Redhook has acknowledged in the past, his dad taught him many things about manhood — most notably how to build a decent fire, how to not be a d-bag and how to use tools.

Many years ago, Redhook's dad gave him a universal joint socket adapter. Changed Redhook's life.

It’s this love for tools and contraptions, instilled by his father, that gave Redhook such a huge kick out of the video below. The actor does an amazing job of never breaking character. You can read the backstory to the “retroencabulator” here.

If you’re looking for something to do with Dad this weekend, you could do worse than hit the Washington Brewers Festival, Friday through Sunday, at Marymoor Park in Redmond.

With over 200 different beers from 64 different breweries, plus food, live music and plenty of stuff for kids, it should be a swell time.

Redhook will be there. Hopefully, you’ll make it out.

This is not Chief Seattle, nor is this guy actually Native American.
But trust us, somewhere Chief Seattle cries real tears over the Sonics.

For Seattle sports fans, one of the worst things that could possibly happen is happening now. The Oklahoma City Thunder (AKA the Zombie Sonics) are four wins away from winning an NBA title. And regardless of what you think of LeBron, we now need him to step up to defend Seattle’s honor.

If you’re from Seattle, watching the NBA has been like drinking sour milk ever since July 2006. That’s when Howard Schultz sold the Seattle Supersonics to an Oklahoma City ownership group. Right then, Seattle fans knew the Sonics’ days in Seattle were numbered.

Even so, Redhook and thousands of other fans took on this cause back in 2008 when the whole crappy thing was unraveling. Still, it wasn’t enough.

Is it slightly pathetic that, four years after the Sonics left town, fans can’t let this go? Maybe. But if it is, count Redhook among the pathetic masses. The Sonics were in Seattle for 40 freakin’ years, then they were stolen from us. You never want to see your ex- become phenomenally happy after she’s kicked you to the curb.

Moving on to a complete non sequitur. Since Prometheus opens this weekend, Redhook thought it would be nice to review this heartwarming scene from Alien. It still holds up after 33 years.

Redhook’s road tripping it to The Gorge this Memorial Day Weekend for the 11th Sasquatch Festival to party with 107.7 The End at the Gorge Campground.

There are much, much worse places to see live music.

Sasquatch gets more humongous every year. This year, it’ll have over 13o bands, performers and comedy acts on five different stages. How big is too big? Guess we’ll find out.

Redhook's road trip RV will be similar to the EM-50 Urban Assault Vehicle from Stripes, minus the missles and flamethrower.

If you’re reading this and thinking, “Say, this Sasquatch thing sounds fun. I should go,” you’re totally SOL. Actually, that’s not completely true. You have until 11:59 PDT on Wednesday, May 23 to win two 4-day passes with camping. If you don’t win, then you’re SOL. So hurry and enter already.

For some reason, as Redhook packed for Sasquatch, he couldn’t help but think back to when he was a kid and saw the Six Million Dollar Man fight Bigfoot. Back then, Redhook thought the Six Million Dollar Man was the coolest show ever. Seeing it again now, Redhook has no idea why:

Heads up: this coming Sunday is Mother’s Day. You still have time to buy a card, send flowers, make brunch reservations or, at least, punch a reminder in your phone so you remember to call. If you forget, don’t blame Redhook.

If the neighbor lady looks like she's been marinating in teriyaki sauce, call CPS.

Now, if your mom is a horrible person, like, say, Crazy Tanning Mom. Or the one arrested several weeks back for — try not to puke — having sex with her son. Or any one of a dozen other awful moms we’ll hear about in the news this week, by all means, don’t visit her at the women’s penitentiary. Redhook gives you a pass. But in general, most moms are worth some acknowledgment.

Is your mom as tough as Sarah Connor? Guess we'll have to wait until the evil robots arrive to find out.

Of course, no matter how awesome your mom is, she’s probably not quite as kick ass as Sarah Connor. As the mother of John Connor in the Terminator movie franchise, Sarah is tasked with raising the young man who will eventually lead the human resistance against an army of deadly machines. For her sacrifices and achievements, Redhook thinks she may be the greatest movie mom of all time.

Maybe your mom raised you alone. Maybe she worked two jobs. Maybe she even volunteered at a pet rescue center. But did she have sex with a dude from the future, train with Latin American guerrillas, break out out of a mental ward, bust countless guys in the teeth, teach you all forms of weaponry and destroy killer cyborgs, all in an effort to save the human race from destruction? Probably not.

Still, even though your mom might not be able to do a pull up or build an explosive device, chances are she did the best she could to get you where you are today. Hopefully, that’s a good place.

Behold: delicious Redhook IPA in a can.

Yup, 77 years after canned beer first went on sale in America, Redhook is introducing its first brew in a can. We just wanted to be sure this whole “can thing” wasn’t a fad. Plus, we wanted to make sure our IPA tasted as perfectly hoppy and delicious in cans as it does on tap and in the bottle. It does.

A few examples of activities that are enhanced by Redhook IPA in cans.

Probably the best thing about cans is that the empties are light and easy to pack out. That makes Redhook IPA in cans perfect for doing anything, anywhere. Although we can’t in good conscience recommend drinking and hunting at the same time. Post-hunting, though? Totally cool.

Lastly, people (primarily college students and hillbillies) will ask, “Should I shotgun new Redhook IPA in a can?” No, you should not. For one thing, Redhook frowns upon irresponsible drinking, which shotgunning definitely is. For another, shotgunning tends to waste beer, which we also frown upon. Lastly, shotgunning doesn’t look nearly as cool as you think it does. Check out the old ladies above. An odd combination of cute and sad. Woooooo!

Yes, our new IPA can opens up a world of possibilities, including beer can chicken, beer can mini stoves and a simple way to improve your wi-fi reception. Google it.

Of course, we think the best use of our IPA is to drink it.
